English nouns

What is a noun?

English nouns are words that refer to people, places, things, or ideas. They are an essential part of the English language and are used in almost every sentence. Here are some details about English nouns:

  1. Common Nouns: These are general words that refer to a person, place, thing, or idea. Examples include: dog, city, book, and love.
  2. Proper Nouns: These are specific names of people, places, or things. Examples include: John, Paris, Coca-Cola, and Mount Everest.
  3. Concrete Nouns: These are nouns that refer to physical objects that can be seen, touched, or smelled. Examples include: tree, car, and perfume.
  4. Abstract Nouns: These are nouns that refer to ideas or concepts that cannot be seen or touched. Examples include: love, freedom, and happiness.
  5. Collective Nouns: These are nouns that refer to groups of people, animals, or things. Examples include: team, herd, and family.
  6. Countable Nouns: These are nouns that can be counted as individual units. Examples include: book, chair, and apple.
  7. Uncountable Nouns: These are nouns that cannot be counted as individual units. Examples include: water, air, and sugar.
  8. Compound Nouns: These are nouns that are made up of two or more words. Examples include: bookcase, toothbrush, and basketball.
  9. Possessive Nouns: These are nouns that show ownership or possession. Examples include: John's car, the cat's tail, and the company's profits.

Why should we care about the type of noun?

When writing a sentence, we need to know the kind of subject to use the verb properly. And English subjects are mainly made from nouns. For example:

A dog is barking.

My two dogs are playing with each other in the garden.

My volunteer team has 5 members. Three of them have the same last name.

This is called subject-verb agreement, an important grammar rule that we will learn about it later.
