English Prepositions
What is a preposition?
A preposition is a word that shows the relationship between a noun (or pronoun) and other words in a sentence. Prepositions typically indicate the position, direction, or time of an action or event.
The cat is on the mat.
She is going to the store.
In the above example, the preposition on shows the relationship between the noun cat and the noun mat, indicating the position of the cat on the mat. The preposition to indicates the direction of the action of going.
There are many prepositions in English, including common ones like in, on, at, by, with, to, from, and of. Some prepositions can be used in multiple ways and can have different meanings depending on the context in which they are used.
Combination with other words
Prepositions can also be used in combination with other words to form prepositional phrases, which can act as adverbs, adjectives, or nouns in a sentence:
The cat with the big eyes is mine.
For example, the prepositional phrase with the big eyes acts as an adjective modifying the noun cat.
