Subject, Action and Object
This is some examples of English sentences:
I love you!
They closed the door.
He likes sunflowers.
The black horse won the race.
An English sentence often consists of three elements:
- Subject, the person or thing that performs the action: I, They, He, The black horse
- Action, the verb following after the subject: love, closed, likes, won.
- Object, the person or thing that receive the affect of the action: you, the door, sunflowers, the race.
When the subjects perform actions that have no effect on anyone or anything, the sentences only has 2 elements:
He is thinking.
They are singing.
My parents are cooking in the kitchen.
