In linguistics, a “part of speech” is a category of words that have similar grammatical properties. English has nine parts of speech, which are briefly described below:

1. Noun: A noun is a word that refers to a person, place, thing, idea, or concept. Examples include dog, teacher, city, and love.
2. Pronoun: A pronoun is a word that is used to replace a noun in a sentence. Examples include he, she, it, and they.
3. Verb: A verb is a word that expresses an action, state, or occurrence. Examples include run, sing, be, and have.
4. Adjective: An adjective is a word that modifies or describes a noun or pronoun. Examples include big, red, happy, and clever.
5. Adverb: An adverb is a word that modifies or describes a verb, adjective, or other adverb. Examples include quickly, happily, very, and really.
6. Preposition: A preposition is a word that shows the relationship between a noun or pronoun and other words in a sentence. Examples include in, on, at, and with.
7. Conjunction: A conjunction is a word that connects words, phrases, or clauses. Examples include and, but, or, and because.
8. Interjection: An interjection is a word or phrase that expresses strong emotions or feelings. Examples include ouch, wow, hey, and oh.
9. Article: An article is a word that is used before a noun to indicate whether the noun is specific or general. English has two articles: the and a/an.

These nine parts of speech are the building blocks of English sentences, and understanding their functions is crucial for mastering English grammar.
